Went to last night's Nats/Marlins, mainly braving the rain for the chance to check out Petit's first major league start (and win). Just a couple thoughts, paraphrased from an email I sent a friend this morning...

Just as I've read in the past. Petit's velocity wasn’t super (he topped out at 89 on the scoreboard radar gun), but he supposedly makes up for it by fooling hitters with his “deceptive delivery,” which I imagined was somewhere in the Willis/Nomo school of pitching. As you tell from the 4 first inning runs he gave up, he wasn’t all that deceptive. He kept the ball hidden for an extra fraction of a second compared to most pitchers, but that seemed to be the extent of hsi deception. And that went out the window with runners on base. Control was quite good; no walks, and he worked in and out of the strike zone quite well. In general, I could see him being an effective control pitcher for quite some time, but he could also be the sort of pitcher hitters figure out and doesn' have the overpowering stuff to get out of binds when they do.
